1. Founders in the prophetic mode offer us a vision of a unified world, a “consciously integrated and meaningful attitude toward life,” enchanting, organizing, and lending significance to participants’ conduct.

2. Enchantment is purchased on credit. The prophet-founder, by offering a series of visions of the world, makes an implicit series of promises to investors, which racks up tech debt for engineering. Demonstrations renew the faith.

3. Enchantments are temporary, sustained by social belief and infrastructure. The scaffolding of ritual, symbol, and institution converts worthless tokens into currency. Disenchantment is a bank run. Cringe is how a failed spell feels to a skeptical outsider.

4. The magical CEO is a battery in an interaction-ritual circuit. There is no such thing as an isolated genius. Prophets not only charge up; they themselves require charging. A speaker’s energy rises with a responsive room and depresses with a dead one.

5. Single-mindedness involves a series of ever-poorer Pareto trades. A Magnum Opus risks consuming the ecologies of practices and relations which support it. Fanaticism, not passion, dooms Ahab, not the passion.

6. Stabilize by orienting toward the ideal, not by cathexing on the wobble. The surfer who fixates on the disruption amplifies it until it throws him. Soberly audit a belief structure mid-wave and it will crash around you.

7. Speak to create a mood-reality, not to query it. Charisma accrues to the most compelling shows of solidity. The uninitiated ask “What are you thinking?”—searching for solid ground, not realizing that the uncertainty in their voice has consequences.

8. Mastery lies through the valley of relativism. The beginner’s faith is naive—he simply hasn’t confronted the squishiness of himself or of the world. The master’s crisis succeeds such a confrontation: every frame revealed as one frame among many, every solidity as performance. The magician who passes through this valley arrives at faith, a peak higher than self-deception—belief held with full knowledge of its contingency.
